With my aunt I went through the underground schools, not with her, but with the teacher there. This is how we did it ? we pushed our exercise books from the table into a drawer and played a board game, because you never knew who was coming. It could have been a visit from police. I can still remember this: We had an Italian teacher who was really sly. She was very nice and I was the teacher’s pet, because I learned Italian very easily. We sat there, six years old, a bunch of German kids, and the Italian teacher came in, and didn’t speak a word of German. And then she said: "Buon giorno bambini come state" and we thought ?what is this about; what is she saying?' Then it went so slowly, starting with tavolo, finestra, which we could also see in our exercise books. It went very slowly for the ones who wanted to learn - those who hadn't been told by the parents that they didn't need to learn Italian - many parents told their children they didn't need to learn. So, when school was over they didn’t know Italian well. I spoke good Italian, and I still love the Italian language more than anything.
